Wampus Pond is a part of Armonk and is surrounded by natural beauty. In the center of the park, the huge pond is the main point, and it is the first thing you notice when you arrive. It’s incredible to imagine that such a tranquil haven of nature can be found just a short distance from one of the busiest roads in the area. Wampus Pond is one of those hidden jewels that you don’t want to miss out on because it’s so easy to overlook.

In the Towns of New Castle and North Castle, Wampus Pond is a gorgeous jewel of a park that is right on Route 128 and a short walk from the town center. The park offers a variety of activities for people of all ages and interests, whether they are looking for a little adventure or just want to relax with a nice book and take in the scenery.

Wampus Pond was named for the Indian from whom the land was initially purchased in 1696, and it is located on the western edge of the property. Wampus is a Native American word that means “opossum,” and the natural pond was previously known as Wampus Lake Reservoir. Wampus Pond was previously a part of the water supply for New York City, and in 1963, Westchester County purchased Wampus Pond and 93 acres from the City of New York for a total of $1 million.

Unsurprisingly, various Native American artifacts as well as relics of historically significant residential complexes in or around the park were discovered during a cultural resources inventory recently conducted in the area. Visiting Wampus Pond and learning about the rich history of the land is a wonderfully thought-provoking experience. What you may come upon or who may have walked the same trail hundreds of years ago are all unknowns when you are out walking.

In addition to ice skating and bird-watching, Wampus Pond offers numerous other activities for tourists to enjoy throughout the year, including fishing, boating, and swimming. The park allows dogs, but they must be kept on a leash at all times and are not permitted in the picnic areas or on the playground. The opening of the pond for row-boating is one pastime that many people look forward to during the warmer months. Take a few hours to relax on a tranquil sail across the pond, or bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it by staying overnight.

There are picnic tables placed up throughout the park, in addition to the rowboats, so that visitors can take time to relax and take in the beauty of the park’s natural environs. Wampus Pond is the ideal location for a quick lunch break, where you may rest in the tranquility of the pond. Please keep in mind that this is a carry-in/carry-out facility.
